If you know Blockhead, it’s most likely as Aesop Rock’s pseud0-sidekick or for his layered, sample-based, instrumental Hip Hop opuses. In addition to these, he’s also a funny, honest, opinionated, self-deprecating New York Jew— sort of like the ones I grew up with. And in the two-or-so months since I discovered it, I’ve spent countless paid work hours on his blog, Phat Friend, digesting his opinions (he’s got a lot of them) with great amusement. It mostly consists of Block riffing on non-music-related topics, and the results are pretty well thought-out and entertaining.
Personally, I get some satisfaction from the idea that my (hard-)earned money, exchanged for his music, enables him to stay home, making beats and updating his blog, the fruits of which distract me from optimal productivity at my job, which allows me to purchase said music again and again. But, yeah, go check it out.
